“One day my teacher asked me what I want to be when I grow up. I answered: I want to be happy.” — John Lennon
Society shapes us to conveniently fit in designated roles. Since a very young age, we are taught to think a certain way and to conform. We are tested by our abilities to follow rules, take orders, and repeat what we have been told to memorize.
Society promises us stability, peace, and freedom. But when we look at the life we are set to live, one might disagree that we get our end of the bargain.
The thing is that our society runs through implemented systems, our economy, and the money that feeds it, is a system within a system. And as we are busy conforming, as we are busy not asking questions, living day by day trimming our dreams to adapt to our reality, there are other people out there, studying and figuring out how that system works, asking questions and finding strategies to find new ways to navigate the system and break free from the dependence of a limited role with limited rewards.
We go to school, then to college, then we get a job to pay our college debt, we work from 9 to 5 and we collect new debts much faster than we earn promotions and better salaries, we get married, we have children, but we have no time to spend with our families, we save for retirement, but we lose our retirement money when the market crashes, we are tired, but we must continue to work because we can’t make enough money to finally retire, and our children, now adults are struggling to pay their debts and raise their children. It’s a sad, vicious cycle that represents the average modern American life.
So what are we doing wrong? We got good grades in school, we don’t miss any days at work, we obey and we conform and we are waiting to live that promised American Dream. But the truth is, this does not feel like a dream. We feel closer to a hamster in the wheel. Doesn’t the hamster know he is not going anywhere? I can see from outside his cage that he is not going anywhere, but maybe, from his limited perspective just the fact that he is struggling, moving his little feet as fast as he can, might give him the impression that he is indeed on his way to wherever he needs to be. Is that what is happening to all of us?
That might be the answer: Perspective.
Maybe the fact is we are so deep in our own perspective, and so busy running the wheel that we can’t see past it. We don’t have time to question, we don’t have time to figure it out.
But maybe we just need to engage that feeling that we all had one day, that feeling that there must be a better way, that our dreams are possible, that life should feel different than this. Maybe that is the motivation we need to push us to open our minds to see beyond what we have been conditioned to see and push ourselves to try new strategies, to get out of our comfort zone because if we think about it, it’s not that comfortable where we are at.
We look at the rich people, but all we see is the life we want to live. We see houses, we see cars, and we follow them on social media as a sad type of entertainment. We might once ask ourselves how did they get there, but we are quick to answer, they are probably born rich or they had an opportunity that was unique to them.
But is that right? Are all wealthy people born rich? Are the opportunities that rich people take advantage of only available to them? It must be because otherwise, everyone else would be doing it. But wait a minute. I was just realizing how I have been stuck in a hamster wheel, taught to conform, unable to see past this limited perspective, and I don’t understand the system. So even if the opportunities available to the rich were available to me, would I be able to see it? Is it possible?
If someone would tell me that there is a way, that there are many ways to go through life and many ways to navigate the systems, that there are ways to make money and still spend time with family, ways to actually fully retire, that there are even ways to go to college and have no debt… Well today, I might want to believe it enough that I am willing to listen. Because there is no way that everyone is living the same way, there is no way all wealthy and successful people were born into it. And if one person can find a way out, anyone can find a way out. Today I will choose to believe that it’s possible, so I continue on the path to find out how.
I was trying to remember who told me that if it’s too good to be true it is not real and that I shouldn’t start my own business because it’s too risky. And all I can remember were people that were in the same situation as me, running the hamster wheel. So how would they know?
In a system where my debt is helping someone else get richer, and my job is also making someone else get richer, why would anyone advise me against it? If most people are stuck on the same exact maze as me, how can I ask them the way?
And so I changed. And as I changed so did my perspective about things. I found many answers and I learned a whole lot. I met new people, and I found new opportunities. I let go of my regrets and I let go of my fears. I convinced myself that it was not too late to change. And I am so glad I did. Today I have time for my family and I can teach my children the lessons I learned. Today I am living my best life by teaching other people how to do the same. Today I understand the system and I make it work for my benefit. I know where my money is, how it grows and safe ways to manage it. The word debt no longer makes me cringe, because hitting the bottom is what made me change in ways I would never have imagined I could.
